Introduction
In this experiment, we will be comparing solar tubes and conventional fluorescent & incandescent lights. To perform this, we will determine whether solar tubes produce more light than incandescent light and traditional fluorescent light. We will check which type of light source is more cost-effective solar tubes or conventional fluorescent.
Aim
To determine if a solar tube produces more light than incandescent light and traditional fluorescent light.
Theory
1. An incandescent light source is an electric light source that glows until the wire filament is heated.
2. The ability of some chemicals to absorb radiation and emit visible light is known as fluorescence, and the source which emits this kind of light rays is called fluorescent light.
3. Solar tubes are physical structures that transmit and distribute natural or artificial light for illuminating purposes.
Solar Tube
Incandescent Tube
Fluorescent Tube
Requirements
1. 1 Conventional Incandescent Light Bulb
2. 1 Fluorescent Light Bulb
3. 1 11 cm Diameter Dryer Duct,
4. 2 Simple Light Fixtures Tree
5. Large Storage Boxes of the Same Size
6. Box Cutter
7. Light Meter
Procedure
Step 1: Take three boxes of the same size.
Step 2: Label the boxes as incandescent light bulbs, fluorescent light bulbs, and solar tubes.
Step 3: In each box, make a hole of 10cm.
Step 4: In each box, put the related light source.
Step 5: With the help of a light meter, test them on three different days by putting them on different sides (top, bottom, and middle).
Step 6: In lumens, measure both kinds of lights, filtered and unfiltered.
Step 7: Note down your observation and result.
Observation
1. The solar tube produces the least amount of light and least amount of heat, and in a long-term setting, it is the most cost-effective.
2. The incandescent light source produces the middle amount of light, the most amount of heat, and is the least cost-effective.
3. The fluorescent light source produces the most amount of light among the three sources, the middle amount of heat, and is the least cost-effective.
Result
We find that every light source has a particular function. The solar tube produces the least amount of light without heating much and is cost-effective, while the fluorescent tube produces the most light. The last one is an incandescent source. It produces the most amount of heat and the least amount of light.
Precaution
1. Put the light sources carefully in the boxes.
2. Carefully note down your observation.
3. Do not forget to put the light source on three different sides in three days.
Conclusion
This experiment of comparing solar tubes and conventional fluorescent & incandescent lights. We have seen the kind of light sources which produce the most amount of light and also their cost-effectiveness.
VIVA Questions With Answers
Q.1 What was the aim of your experiment?
ANS. To determine if a solar tube produces more light than incandescent light and traditional fluorescent light.
Q.2 Which source produced the most amount of light among the three?
ANS. Fluorescent tubes produced the most amount of light among the three different sources.
