Introduction
Through this science experiment, we will understand how colored surfaces affect the temperature during day and night. To perform this will determine the solar heating and night cooling of colored surfaces that heat up in the presence of sunlight and cool down under the night sky.
Aim
To find how different kinds of colored surfaces heat up in the presence of sunlight and cool down under the night sky.
Theory
1. How much light is reflected by the surface is determined by its color.
2. The light energy that does not get reflected by the paint is turned into heat energy and increases the temperature of the surface.
3. Conservation of energy can be accomplished in several different ways, and the color of paint is one of them.
4. Black color absorbs the most light. On the other hand, white color reflects the most light.
5. The color of an object is determined by the light it reflects.
Requirements

Procedure
Step 1: Set a number of samples with different paints on them on a foam insulation pad.
Step 2: Place this foam insulation pad on the ground under the sky.
Step 3: Now, let this pad heat up in the sunlight during the day and cool down in the night light during the night.
Step 4: Choose the time when the weather is clear.
Step 5: Using a hand-held infrared thermometer, measure the temperature at various times during the experiment.
Step 6: During the experiment, keep track of the air temperature.
Step 7: Measure the sun’s elevation during the day as the angle at which the sun hits the surface determines the light received by that surface.
Observation
1. We observed that the paint temperature was at its peak during midday and decreased as the angle of the sun decreased.
2. At night, we observed that all the paints were closely related to temperature.
3. Average temperature showed only a moderate change in temperature during the nighttime.
Result
1. During the daytime, paints were actually hotter than the air. And during the late afternoon and night, paints were cooler than the air.
2. We can apply this experiment to transportation vehicles, and selecting a suitable color paint will help in keeping the vehicle at a minimum temperature.
3. This can also be used in building energy-efficient houses.

1. Record the temperature carefully.
2. Do not forget to keep track of air temperature.
Conclusion
After the experiment to find out how colored surfaces affect the temperature during day and night, we determined how the color of paint gets affected by the temperature of 16 metal squares during daytime under sunlight and during nighttime under night light.
