Measuring Sugar Content Using iPod Touch And 3D Glasses | Science Experiment

Introduction

In this experiment, we will be measuring sugar content using iPod touch and 3D glasses. To perform this experiment, we will be developing a method to use 3D movie glasses and an iPod touch for measuring the polarization rotation, which in turn gives us the amount of sugar content in a solution like beverages and other drinks.

Aim

To develop a method of using the iPod touch and 3D movie glasses to find the amount of sugar in a drink.

Theory

1. We are performing this experiment because whenever we visit a restaurant or other shops, we unknowingly buy drinks containing a large amount of sugar, which can prove fatal to health.

2. To test the sugar level when buying any drink, we will be doing this experiment with 3D movie glasses and an iPod.

Measuring Sugar Content Using iPod Touch And 3D Glasses | Science Experiment

3D Glasses

Requirements

1. Three different varieties of Apple Juice

2. 7-Up (regular and diet)

3. iPod touch

4. 3D movie glass

5. Notebook

6. Pen

7. 5 beakers

Procedure

Step 1: Take all 5 liquids (three types of apple and two types of 7-Up) in 5 beakers (one beaker for one liquid).

Step 2: Take an iPod touch. It will give a source of linearly polarised light. Make this light pass through the liquids, one after another.

Step 3: Take a pair of 3D glasses.

Step 4: Using this pair, measure the polarisation rotation that was created by each of the liquids.

Step 5: To find the measurement of sugar content, plot a graph with calibration liquids and measure the obtained test liquid with it.

Step 6: Record your observations.

Observation

1. From the graph, we observed that normal apple juice had 28 grams written on its label, while we measured 25 grams.

2. Low calories apple juice had 14 grams written on its label while we measured 15 grams.

3. Half-strength apple juice had 14 grams written on its label, while we measured 13 grams.

4. Diet 7-Up had 0 grams written on its label, while we measured 0.5 grams.

5. Regular 7-Up had 25 grams written on its label while we measured 8 grams.

Result

1. From this experiment of measuring sugar content using iPod touch and 3D glasses, we found that it is actually possible to find the sugar content of a drink using 3D movie glasses and an iPod.

2. The presence of sweetness in regular 7-Up is because of the addition of fructose corn syrup. As a result, we could not find an accurate result for regular 7-Up.

3. The presence of sucrose in a liquid acts positively, while fructose acts negatively. As a result, both of these cancel each other and provide us with wrong measurements.

4. From this experiment, we found an easy and cheap way to test the presence of sugar in beverages and other drinks.

Precaution

1. Plot the graph carefully.

2. Make sure each liquid is different from one other.

Conclusion

In this experiment, we tried to find a method to test the presence of sugar in a drink.

VIVA Question With Answers
