Neutral Buoyancy of Marine Animals

Introduction

In the experiment, we will determine the reason behind the neutral buoyancy of marine animals and how marine animals like fish achieve neutral buoyancy. We hypothesized that by varying the static lift of an object, we would be able to create a natural state of buoyancy for any object.

Aim

To determine the reason behind the neutral buoyancy of marine animals like fish.

Theory

1. All marine animals use three static lift methods to maintain a natural state of buoyancy.

2. They have strong bones and less dense fats than water.

3. They have air or other gasses in their swim bladder, which help them in creating a state of natural buoyancy.

4. They obtain a natural state of buoyancy by balancing bone and blubber present in their body.

Requirements

1. A tank with a capacity of 9.46 liters.

2. An electronic scale

3. Measuring cup

4. Grease the pencil

5. Ruler

6. Tape

7. Binder clips

8. Notebook

9. Six different sizes gallons

10. A small water bottle

11. Cod liver oil

12. Ten pitted olives

13. 10 different sizes of Crisco shortening

Procedure

Step 1: Take a fish tank with a capacity of 9.46 liters.

Step 2: Take ten pitted olives and ten different sizes of Crisco shortening.

Step 3: Place the Crisco shortening in each of the ten pitted olives.

Step 4: Drop each of the pieces in the fish tank.

Step 5: Now, observe what happens to those pieces. Whether they obtained buoyancy or not.

Step 6: To perform the second experiment, take six balloons, and all these balloons must be of different sizes.

Step 7: Attach each balloon to the lead pipe. Observe if they attain buoyancy or not.

Step 8: To perform the third experiment, take a bottle and add the cod liver oil until it reaches a state of natural buoyancy.

Step 9: Record your observations in a notebook.

Observation

1. We find that in each of the experiments, we attained a state of buoyancy with the help of static uplift.

2. We also find that the Archimedes Principle, which states “the buoyant force exerted by an object is always equal to the weight of the volume of the water it has displaced”, is a natural phenomenon.

3. In every experiment, we achieved buoyancy when the water density matched the experiment’s density.

4. We also found that the difference between the positive, neutral, and negative buoyancy conditions was small.

Result

1. Our hypothesis is correct, and we obtained buoyancy in all the experiments.

2. We also understand the reason behind the natural state of buoyancy attained by marine animals.

3. The experiment can be used in attaining buoyancy in different things like submarines, fishing lures, scuba, etc.

Precautions

1. Take help from your teacher.

2. Note down your observation correctly.

Conclusion

In this experiment, we find out the reason behind the natural state of frequency of marine animals using static uplift.

VIVA Questions With Answers

Q.1 What was the aim of your experiment?

ANS. We aimed to determine the natural state of buoyancy acquired by marine animals like fish.

Q.2 How do marine animals acquire buoyancy in water?

ANS. Marine animals use three methods to attain natural buoyancy in water. The first is due to the presence of strong bones and fat. The second is due to the presence of air in the bladder. And third is by balancing one and the bladder.

Q.3 Where can we use this experiment?

ANS. Astronaut training, scuba, submarines, fishing lures, etc.
