Stop Freezing

Introduction

In this experiment (stop freezing), we will be determining how the freezing point and melting point of water get affected by the addition of different substances.

Aim

To find out the effect of different substances on water’s freezing and melting point.

Theory

1. The temperature at which any liquid gets converted into a solid-state is termed the freezing point of that liquid.

2. The opposite of the freezing point is the melting point. The temperature at which a solid converts into liquid is termed melting point.

3. For this experiment, we hypothesise that the addition of any substance decreases the freezing point of a liquid.

Requirements

1. Salt

2. Sugar

3. Vinegar

4. Lemon Juice

5. Flour

6. Baking Soda

7. Milk

8. Alcohol

9. Water

10. Logbook

11. Computer

12. Nine beakers

13. Refrigerator

Procedure

Step 1: Take 200 ml. of water in four beakers

Step 2: Dissolve different amounts of salt, sugar, baking soda, and flour into each of the beakers.

Step 3: Take four other breakers and add 200 ml of water into each of the separate beakers.

Step 4: Dissolve alcohol, milk, lemon juice, and vinegar into each of the separate beakers.

Step 5: Take 200 ml of water in another beaker.

Step 6: The last beaker will be our control.

Step 7: Put each of the nine beakers in a refrigerator.

Step 8: After every 10 minutes, try checking the beakers.

Step 9: Record your observation and result in a computer and logbook.

Addition of foreign substances into water

Observations

1. From the experiment, we observed that the salt decreased the freezing point of water most.

2. As we increased the amount of salt in water, the freezing point decreased.

3. The purpose of using the control was the comparison. We wanted something to compare the result with, so we took water and did not add anything to it.

4. We also found a linear relationship between the freezing point and the amount of addition of solid substances like salt, baking soda, and sugar.

Result

1. In the experiment, we hypothesise that the addition of any substance will decrease the freezing of water. This means that it will decrease its freezing point whenever you add something to the water.

3. The added substance makes the water freeze slower.

4. However, different substances affect the freezing point of water differently.

5. Not only this, but we also learned more about the variable and constant.

Precautions

1. Do not add anything foreign to the control.

2. Repeat the experiment by adding more amounts of given substances for better clarification.

Conclusion

In this experiment, we found out the effect of foreign substances on the freezing point of water.
